Dr. Marc Dauer- 2070 Grafts via FUT

    Greetings,

Here is a patient who had a previous hair transplant with another physician and waited many years to have a follow up procedure. Subsequently he lost significantly more hair in the mid scalp creating an island of baldness between the transplanted hair in the front and the native hair in the back of the scalp. I transplanted 2070 grafts via FUT to increase the density in the frontal and mid scalp.

    Dr. Dauer,

How many grafts did this patient have placed into his hairline from his first physician? Was he taking finasteride at any time? I see cases like this and it always reminds me of my own battles early in life dealing with continued loss and isolated prior work. You did a good job on this so kudos to you and your team.

      Joe,
This patient did not remember how many grafts he had received in his previous procedure but from his examination I would estimate it was in the 1500-1800 range. The patient was not taking finasteride. This is further evidence that it is imperative that we educate prospective patients that if they are not taking finasteride it will shorten the time period in between hair transplant procedures. In addition, that hair restoration surgery is not a one shot deal. Genetic hair loss is progressive and every patient will require additional procedures to keep up with continuing hair loss.
