Default Dr. Lindsey and son present research on HT for radiation alopecia in kids at AAFPRS

Some readers may recall that my daughter got cancer about 5 and a half years ago. Although we've had some setbacks, currently she's doing well.

However, this was a huge life altering event for our family. Although Julia had radiation to her brain, she was left with minimal permanent hair loss, but lots of kids (and adults) are not so fortunate. Relatively little, other than a few case reports, is in the medical literature to document HT in patients who've had radiation hair loss.

I've had the occasion now to do 4 cases on young people with significant (1 or 2 palm sized areas) baldness years after radiation therapy. I've described those cases in other posts on this forum.

My son has become interested in my career as a possible profession and has worked in my office now for 3 years when not in school. He too was profoundly impacted by his sister's illness and wanted to report on our successes at a national medical meeting.

Last week he and I attended the annual American Academy of Facial Plastic and Reconstructive Surgery meeting in Orlando and shown are us in front of our poster. We had good reception and I believe it spurred interest among many physicians who had not known HT after radiation therapy is an option. We've submitted for a talk at a future meeting as well.

Shown are us individually at the poster session.

We've found these cases to be among the most rewarding that our practice has done in 19 years. While not everyone has enough donor hair to be a candidate, I'm hopeful that we can continue to help patients with this terrible problem.
