Default Starting off. Need advice on hairpieces

    Hi,

I'm 27 and have been thinning for almost 8-9 years now. I tried an FUE hair transplant last year, but the results were very marginal. I feel that an hair piece is an only option now, but don't know where to start. I've been going through a lot of the posts, and some of the conflicting opinions have got me more confused than I was when I started the research.

    Can somebody suggest:

    1. What kind of an hairpiece should I be looking for? Here are two pictures of my hairline: http://imgur.com/cj6asYW,oXG9OW0

    2. As a first timer, do you think I should go with a established chain or try a local salon?

    3. I have a travelling job, but mostly based in San Diego. Can anybody recommend any places in and around San Diego that do the best high quality job with hair replacements?

    Thanks,

    George

George Headley was a great cricketer back in the 1930s. I digress.

It would be good to get a shot of the side and back/crown of your head. Whats the hair like there?

On that picture, you need whats known as a "topper".

If you dont feel confident then you can try a salon, but beware. They will charge you a lot more. Reading posts here and elsewhere they will charge form $2000 to $5000 a year for a hairpiece and servicing and produce indifferent results. Really, what you need is one piece to try, not get locked into a contract.

The alternative is DIY from home. There are plenty of youtube videos out there to help with this. Its really not difficult and you will be spending far far less maybe $450 a year. I started DIY from day one and have never had a problem. You need to get a good reliable online place and they will walk you through every step.

Glad you are doing your homework before setting out to buy a topper like a friend of mine did. She a bad experience with a big saloon. It was a grand looking place with views to match. She was shown a number of pieces and explained how they would be attached to her head. She was very sporty. So, it was important that the piece stayed in place and looked natural afterwards. Long story short she had forked out over 1500 dollars to end up with a partially shaved head and badly cut topper and a lot of aggro. Now she has gone DIY and seems to prefer it this way.

    George,

You should check out the online like the other posters said. Looks like you would need a topper.
What you want to find is a good cut-in stylist, in your local area.
A cut-in stylist, is a hairdresser who specialises in cutting hair replacements to fit your existing hair.
They should be able to offer you services without any contract.

grincher where do you get yours?
Also Sammygirl, which one did your friend find that worked for her?

Default Would prefer options in and around San Diego

Hi, thanks for the advice so far. Since I'm starting out, at least for the first time, I don't feel comfortable trying a DIY online. I'm pretty sure I'll mess it up. Are there any recommendations anybody would have for something in the San Diego/LA area?

I agree I'd look for something that doesn't lock me in to a contract.

Also, how strong are these pieces. How much can one depend on them? I'd really have to be convinced that these won't come off at any point in any kind of physical activity.

@Grincher: Yes, one half of my family is British so I do follow some cricket and do some about Headley - the black Bradman Could you tell me where you got your online DIY piece from?

    Thanks,
    George

wow you have impressed me! never saw him play, but Ive been told he was indeed the "black bradman"

They are straightforward and helpful. Though, Im UK based, I also use them when I'm working extended spells in Dubai and Hong Kong as they ship worldwide.

He maintained batting average of just shy of 70. Don't know what's happened to West Indian cricket but it's a long way off it's hey day!

grincher, what products do you order when you are abroad?

I'll be spending the next 12 months in Dubai and can see a need for tape, glue and solvents. Need to find a reliable supplier.

I usually pack what I need before I go. Just works out cheaper and more reliable.

I would take 12-yards of supertape (its more than enough for a year). I'm not really a liquid glue person, but I will have a small 0.5oz bottle for touch ups. 2 bottles of shampoo and some C22 ( 1 bottle per 6-months).

If I ever needed tape when abroad I would ask my supplier to send.

Sorry, I can’t suggest much on kind of hairpiece. You may need to consider various factors like manageability of piece, fit, convenience and most suitable base. Personally, I would prefer local salon but with good reviews. It would be great to consult a friend who has done something like this before or looking for online salon and reading their reviews before actually investing money.

Thank you for sharing especially the quantities. That's give me a good idea of how much individual hair piece supplies I should pack.

Also, I think I need to ease up on the C22 as I'm going through a lot more than a 115ml bottle in 6 months!
