Getting on but still concerned about my hair

I'm 52 now (but look 35 so I'm told) and for the last 10 years or so I've been losing hair from the centre of my head and have pronounced widow's peaks.
I can't bear the thought of hair transplants or wigs and seek alternative solutions.

There are no alternative choices. You have Propecia, Rogaine, hair transplants or hair pieces. There are some medications being used off label like dutasteride, but this is it. Being older gives you even more acceptable choices, including a good hair piece, so if you don't want to be bald, then you have to be realistic.
