Will male pattern baldness always lead to complete baldness ?

Hi all,

Firstly I have been lurking here for a while and want to thank you for a great community where people can get answered they might find hard to get elsewhere.

I have lost a slight amount of hair on my head it is only the size of two of your little fingers that has created a bit of an island on my head which is noticeable when my hair is not completely shaved.

I am 31 years old and have had this since I was about 25 it has not really got that much worse just a bit. However, It does not seem to be getting and worse and I believe that it has actually stopped.

I have had MSP to camoulflage it and it has been great it looks like I have not had any hair thinning at all.

I have done a lot of reading and I am well aware that hair loss is extremely unpredictable (this is thanks to the complexity of our genes)

I can't get an answer to my simple question however.

Is it possible for male pattern baldness to slow down completely or even stop after a time. I ask because the specialist at my MSP clinic which is vinci hair clinic (they specialise in hair transplants) told me that most hair loss occurs between the ages of 18 and 30.

I am kind of hoping that I have been through the worst of it and that I hopefully will not incur any more thinning any time soon.

I would really like to here your answers and experiences ?

Hi and welcome! No one can say with any assurance how or if your hair loss will progress. In most cases, the younger you begin to lose your hair, the more extensive the hair loss will usually be, but there are also those who begin to see hair loss relatively early and it just stops progressing for decades. It is not true that most hair loss occurs between the ages of 18 and 30. Most men notice hair loss after age 30 and in many cases the hair loss can be just as aggressive as if the person began at 18. It all comes down to your individual genetics. The fact that you seem to have stabilized for the past 5 years is a good sign though.

Thanks for taking the time to answer my questions. I feel a bit better know that there is a good chance that my hair may have stabilized possibly for some time.

The cruel thing about MPB it how unpredictable it is. Never knowing what it will be like in ten or five years.

I have had great results with MSP and I have covered up the parts of my head that was thinning. I have always cut my hair really short and I am one of those lucky people that suit tightly cropped hair and for that I am thankful.

Knowing that if it does eventually get worse I can have more MSP if needs be is a great comfort to me

If you are able to look good with really short hair, then you are definitely one of the lucky ones! Do you have any pics?

Yes , it can stop- sometimes forever, but that is very rare. It can start and stop with no apparent reason-that has happened to me several times. The longest time it stoped was for about 15+ years- that is when it went from the front only to starting in the back/

You kind of answered your own question. Its very unpredictable and then you asked if it could stop or slow down. Sure it could. Anything could really happen with it and no one can predict it really. I guess life in general is kind of a gamble long term if you think about it there are no assurances you live to see retirement someday just because most people do.
Hopefully sooner rather than later we see a topical treatment that works that can be used as a safe preventative measure so people dont have to take a drug in case they start going bald because no one knows if you will or not.

there is no male pattern baldness which passes for everyone. Each person's case is different. Your hair loss may stop tomorrow or go all the way.
