New to Rogaine

I'm planning on using rogaine, but I wanted to time it right so that most of the shedding will take place during winter break and hopefully the state of my hair won't be really bad when spring semester starts. How soon after starting treatment does the excessive shedding start, and how long does it last? When should I start the treatment? Also, I've read rogaine causing skin problems....how common is it and is there anything to help combat it? Thank you.
