I know you have no way of knowing, but I'm trying to gather as many opinions as possible.
Hard to say. There are some guys who lose significant hair in a year, but the fin should really mitigate that. tbh if you were a little older I would recommend just going on dut now, but w/ the extra 5-ar enzyme being suppressed, I am not sure if there might be additional risk for someone at 17

I do know of at least 1 guy who supposedly started dut at 17 & had great results. Said he noticed no sides.

Some say fin and dut just delay the inevitable. look up identical twin comparisons where one took medication and the other didn't. There is some encouraging photographic evidence available. You should contact a local hair restoration physician for an evaluation/consultation. Having photos of men on your mother and father's side are useful. I'm not recommending you see a hair restoration physician for a transplant, instead, have them do a HairCheck. It's good to know what you're up against.

What can they tell me with a HairCheck?

    And with what accuracy?

I started to lose hair at 20. However, I was still a NW3 at age 46.

Some guys dont start balding until 22 or 25 and are chrome dome at 30. I would look at young photos of both your grandfathers and see if your hair looks like either of theirs. The style, color etc.......

    Hey Chuck.

I read that our testosterone starts to fade at age 30 and by age 50 we have half the amount. I have also been told that at age 65 we dont have enough testosterone to convert to DHT at levels to destroy hair follicles . What we have at 65 is what we got.

If we took DUT or Fin until age 50 at least, wouldnt we then still keep most of our hair after that even if we quit cold turkey? Let me know your thoughts.

Here is the HairCheck Website. Dr. Cole uses this system and although the HairCheck results (including other information) are helpful in determining a probable hairloss course, the results are not infallible.

Thanks. I'll see if I can get that done.

It's always safer to assume you're going to lose it all, and start fighting it as soon as possible.

But it would be a huge relief to find out I'm only destined for NW3-4.

I believe that would be much easier to fight off with treatments than a NW6-7 predisposition.

Well maybe 2 months after I turned 17 is when I first noticed it started to recede at the left temple. About 6 months later I could no longer part my hair on that side as I had lost too much at that point. Thankfully it slowed down and would come in small spurts, sometimes stopping for a good while.

But regardless, with the meds you have, you have a good chance of stopping it as it is easier to stop mpb than to to get it back so just give it a good chance like a good year.

Aging happens so gradually, it's difficult to gauge. As an older guy, I'm definitely changed from how I was when I was 14-18. I feel the same as I did when I was 35 though. I have only used Rogaine. Dut and fin are definitely effective but the question remains... To what degree and for how long. Identical twin studies can provide valuable documentation. As we know Internet photos may or may not be reliable. What's needed are many more studies.
