Default Does seborrheic dermatitis affect outcome of transplants?

    Hi,

I think I have seborrheic dermatitis, which is little scabs on my scalp. Would this affect the outcome of a hair transplant?
I have a HT coming up in 6 weeks, how is the best way to get rid of seborrheic dermatitis?

    thanks

    Hi,

Use Nizoral shampoo! As a bonus it also seems to do something for hair loss. I have seborrheic dermatitis too, sometimes both on the face and scalp, and my doctor told me to use Nizoral shampoo. Now I use it regularly as a preventive measure both on the face and on the scalp and I rarely get any outbreaks.

I don't know if it will affect the outcome of your HT, but I'm sure your HT surgeon does. You should definitely ask him or her.

EDIT: If you're not sure whether it's seborrheic dermatitis you probably should get a proper diagnosis.

It is a good question. I have done unsuccessful hair transplants in patients with this condition. However, it is preferable that there is no active areas of inflammation when the procedure is performed. I also recommend Nizoral 2% as a treatment for active SD and prevention treatment.

    Hi Dr. Glenn Charles,

The comments that you left do alarm me, as I do have a HT coming up in 6 weeks.
    How unsuccessful were the results?
If the condition is not present at the time of the HT, would it be like doing a HT as if the person never had seborrheic dermatitis?

Yes, If at the time of your procedure there was no active inflammation the results would likely not be effected.

Thanks for replying dr Glenn, with my case I only have one little blister like 1/4 to 1/2 the size of a dime. That's how it has always been with me. It will go away and then my scalp is clear for a while and then I will have another small blister appear. It is usually only one blister present. I have seen some really bad cases on the Internet where it covers a lot of area on the scalp. Plus I only shampoo my scalp once a week and I leave concealors in my scalp (gel, toppik, hairspray, dye my hair too). So all that stuff is in my hair so maybe it might not be seboric dermatitis and it is a small blister from the stuff I leave in my hair? I hope I am worrying over nothing.

How bad we're the seboric dermatitis cases you dealt with that gave unsuccessful hair transplant results?

Should we use nizoral 2 % twice a week or once?

Dr. Charles, if you read this, is there any way this condition (SD) can affect the transplanted hairs later (say months or years after)?
