Dr. Cole subscribes to Hair Transplant Forum International magazine. A lot of interesting articles in there. One article I just read, chronicles methods of keeping hair follicles alive outside of the body (in vitro). According to the article, hair follicles can be kept alive for up to 47 days after they have been carefully removed. Evidently even the slightest damage during removal negatively impacts the follicle's life expectancy. According to the study, "gassing" the follicles (in vitro) with oxygen rather than air proved toxic. As a precaution those just out of hair transplant surgery may want to avoid hyperbaric chambers just to be on the safe side.
