Recovery from transplant

I recently had 2400 grafts surgically inplanted by Dr. Cooly..I am 58 yrs old and the majority of the grafts were placed in the frontal area..He did add some to an area in the back of my head that was semi-bald..It has been 3 weeks since the procedure and I am still experiencing some numbness where the incision and grafts were placed...Is this normal?

What a coincidence we are the same age. Congrats on your procedure with Dr. Cooley.

Yes it is normal to experience the numbness. Our scalps are enriched with endless blood vessels and nerves. Some of them get severed when the donor strip is taken and when the recipient incisions are made.

Both heal over time, and nerve endings regrow. I had post-op numbness with all four of my procedures as many patients do. It can take up to six months or a little more for the numbness to dissipate.

Gilenator, Thanks for the reply....I am very pleased so far with the work of Dr. Cooley..He used the a-cell treatment immediately after my procedure and it really progressed my recovery...I was also impressed with his surgical skills implanting my graphs..I am taking a quarter tablet 3 times a week of Simvastatin (20mg) and taking Help Hair Whey Protein to maintain my original hair. Hoping in 9-12 months to see some real results!!!!

Hi Janus,

Numbness can vary by patient to patient. For my first procedure, my numbness did not go away for a better part of a year, whereas in my third, which was a smaller procedure, the sensation returned by the third month.

Thanks teg 1, I am also noticing more hair loss when combing my hair after showering. My hair seems to be more brittle since the procedure....I have made some changes in how I rinse my hair...Also, blow drying with cool air to help avoid direct contact to surgical areas.
