Default New to BTT, Would appreciate advice

    Hi guys,

For the last year or two I've kept a watchful eye on BTT and have finally decided to ask for a little advice. I'm almost positive I have MPB as It runs in the family. My cousins with the same bald grandfather(mothers side) = bald or nearly bald at my age, 25. My grandmother is not the same as theirs 50% native american. (random fact) but would that have anything to do with my slower progression of mpb as compared to my cousins? Sorry I'm just curious as to what the differences could be if anyone knows.

I also live a very healthy life (diet, exercise, low stress, vitamins etc.). Probably helps some i guess.

I'm only nearing a NW2, and it has taken almost 2-3 years for this to happen once I noticed hair falling out. I feel quite blessed to this regard but I still want to, if possible, HALT the progression of my MPB. Even though my hair is slowly receding back it is VERY dense, except where it thins up then moves back( slow cycle). I'll try to find and post pictures old and new tomorrow or the next day.

Is PREVENTION the best measure for me? I would be happy to keep what I've got. Should I consider Fin. at this point? I just want to be proactive, if possible, to stop any further loss. I should be in grad school for another year or two but would like to not lose it all before I become 'marketable'. Sounds strange, but I have even with the little loss I've had and thought of what may come has taken a toll on my confidence. Very Annoying.

What is the Average price of a consulatation with a dermatologist/hair specialist? Just curious as to a round-about figure as I am on a VERY limited budget.

Prevention is the best measure for anyone.

I'm 25 as well, graduate with my Master's in 1 month. I know the feel about losing your "marketability" -- losing a big part your early twenties to studies. That's certainly exacerbated my concern.

Also like you, I'm NW2 and pushing 3. And I can already tell you I wish I had started finasteride earlier.

Depends if you have health insurance or not. And if you do, it depends on what your co-pay is.

I saw a GP, then a dermatologist, and still opted to self-medicate myself with finasteride (using on-line sources). The politically correct thing for me to say is, "go see a dermatologist, get blood work done, read all the literature on finasteride, and get prescribed finasteride". While this is truly the "safest" route, I still bypassed the last part.

And finally, take pictures of your hair at the same length, in the same light, at baseline and then regular intervals afterwards to track progress.

    Good luck.

If you want to keep what you have, then look at the non-surgical treatments available to slow down or in some cases stop your hair loss.

Surgery can restore your hair to some extent within reason. The saying is prevention is better than cure.

Use a pre emptive strike vs hairloss like propecia and/or minox. If it does halt or better yet regrow, you're golden.

Wouldn't you rather prevent hairloss and maintain while on medication than to go through the hassle of a transplant?

Care enough about your hair? Do it a favor and help it out. But you gotta find out first some research.

For me, being in Canada, the consultation was free and the prescription was within the minute I asked. But the pills itself is about 130 bucks for 90 pills. Rather expensive but its well worth it. Plus I'm a student with no job and I'm sacrificing my money to keep my beautiful locks braH!
