hair loss

Hi a friend of mine has started to lose hair a while ago, he is now bald, but not because of the hairloss, just because it looked really stupid seeing him walking around with a an area with no hair on an otherwise normal head :P The area affected is only as big as a coin, it's really weird, I guess hes a bit embarassed about it. At first he started wearing caps... He didn't even see anyone about this yet. Can Anyone tell me what might be the cause for this? it's really only a coin sized area..

I wouldn't lose sleep over a coin size bald spot, just saying...
