Because he did a humanities based subject, which traditionally funding is much harder unless you're the best of the best. Here in the UK it's tough, especially with cut backs. Im not sure if he's US based or not, I can't talk for America.

But with a science based subject, from what my friends have said, it's much easier to get funding.

What baldozer said. My direct superior at work is getting his phD for free. School is paying for most of it and work is paying the remainder. Granted he's moving through it pretty slow, seeings as he is full time. But, the dude has a kid and a wife and is trucking right along.

    Explore all the options.

In the Uk, it would be logical that science based subjects get more funding as the government wants to promote Science, Technology, Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects as we are short in those key areas.
