I also noticed a thinning spot on the back of my head just under and to the left of my whorl

Hey man,
It just looks like your hair is naturally thinner. In addition, it looks like your sides are much, much shorter than the top & front of your scalp. I wouldn't be stressing your sides it all. My sides have always looked relatively thin when compared to the back, at the same length of course, for my entire life.
Don't stress it.

Thanks Bigthinker, I've been freaking out with this stuff especially since I've had a couple spots of alopecia areata this year.

I know how your feeling, my friend. I've been a chronic worrier my entire life. If you can find a healthy way to get your mind off of it, you'll probably forget it and never see the worry come into fruition.
