    Default Help/Advice

Hi, I'm just after a bit of help / advice if I may. I'm finally facing up to the fact that I'm going bald and at 26 that's pretty hard to take.

I don't really have much knowledge on treatments or where to go from here, so any advice is much appreciated.

My hairdresser suggested I could try Nioxin shampoo, but I'm guessing that's gonna do sweet FA apart from make my hair a bit thicker and not actually grow back in the areas I need?

    I've attached some pics anyway....

(I also saw my GP yesterday and he advised me to go for blood tests which I will be doing tomorrow).

    Hi Chris,

You do not have to go to the lengths of blood tests, however do it if you feel it will help.

In my opinion you have MPB. Your GP would know this.

Forgot to mention that there is no history of balding early on in life in my family. In fact both my granddads probably have more hair on the top of their heads than I do!

Makes not real difference matey - MPB is a genetic lottery.

You should get on the BIG 3

Propecia/proscar: once a day. -Cautious: this medication might cause low libido side effect. I experience it for the first 4 months but it went away, just stick threw it.

    minoxidil/rogaine: am/pm

    nizoral: twice a week.

See a dermatologist or any hair specialist to acquire Propecia or proscar. I will get proscar because it is a lot cheaper but you will have to cut the pill into fourth to get the recommended dosage which isn't much of a big deal. you can also get this medication online.

EDIT: dam, spex beat me to it. lol

Yeah bro, you have my hairline (or I, yours, rather. I'm 24) I've taken two blood tests now, which didn't diagnose MPB, but eliminated other possible culprits. I do live in the US however where, even with insurance, I've still dropped close to $175 on two blood tests, seeing a GP, seeing a derm. I'm thinking that will be less of an issue with you, seeings as you live in the UK. [hate not having universal coverage]

I'll just echo what these gentlemen have said, you'll want to consider some combination of the big 3. Spend a little time learning what each is meant to do and what the possible side effects ( as well as rates of sides) are.

Oh, and don't stress too much. You caught it early on. If you have any luck with treatments, you may be able to ride the hair train until you're old enough not to give a flip.

The nice thing is that you're catching this relatively early--you're probably a NW2 (look up the Norwood scale if you haven't already). Because hair loss is so incremental, many guys don't really confront it until they've experienced significant loss. Young guys tend to turn a blind eye to it as well, because they just don't think about it and figure it won't happen to them.

Read lots, figure out what's comfortable for you, and act accordingly. The Big 3 aren't a panacea, but they can really help, depending upon how well you respond to them.
