I couldn't really be bothered digging up studies and what not, but even in the modern world Asia (including India) and the middle east strongly favour lighter coloured skin still. Black people too based on studies but also anecdotally - look at all the so-called black beauty icons. They're all very light skinned like Tyra Banks.
And things are changing a little bit. Whites prefer a light tan somewhat as pale skin has become associated with anti-social behaviour, for example.
