Hands down crown loss is worse...

Having lurked here and on other forums about hair loss for some time, posting just now, it amazes me that many on the internet facing MPB think a temporal recession is worse than crown loss.

Transplant docs, who know the large number of grafts and more challenging work and complications involved in crown repair, push this "receding hair lines frame the face" meme on the public, to help themselves.

I have considerable crown loss, and not nearly as bad from the front. I can tell you balding from the back is a lot more traumatic and depressing, and disfiguring. You can hide a frontal with comb overs better, and unless it's really really bad, most on the public will hardly look twice. It almost looks distinguished.

You have little recourse except to shave, because it looks soooo baaad.

People who have never heard of Norwood scales call you balding if you have any sort of real bald spot. And it's called a "receding hairline" (e.g. not a balding hair line/temples) for a reason, and a "balding vertex/crown" for a reason.

The reason is you have a solid mass of hair with an irregular expanding hole in it that is hard to hide and looks really bad, limiting options. Transplants will require lots of grafts, and probably multiple expensive surgeries to correct and keep up with the loss. It's a lot worse to lose your crown.

My nearly 80 bio father and well into his 90s bio grandfather have better crowns than I do, and I am under age 45. My several years older bio full brother, hardly any loss except a super modest and irrelevant frontal recession and zero crown loss to boot!

You're right. I sadly have a double misfortune.. a have both balding crown and expressed receding hair lines. Its enough of a shock in front, but when use 2 mirrors and see my balding in the back.. its always a shock and very depressing ! And You're also right about the transplant, its much easier to cover up just the front, but when You a problem in the crown as well, with the number of grafts required.. it becomes mission unaffordable !

How about no receding hair line, or very little, but just beyond the hair line the M pattern is emerging.

Couple that with general thining over the top.

I would much rather have a clearly defined receding temporal hairline loss in a nicely defined M - that way when I do finally buzz, it won't look weird....

Lol its come to us debating which of us has the worst hair loss, and the worst way for it to go. How depressing.

Cant beleive it is 2012 and people cant put new hair on people's heads in a quick and cost effective way.

I don't have a defined bald patch yet, but definitely have thinning at the crown/ vertex. I have minimal recession. NW2 at most. I don't have the massive bites out of each corner as the diagrams show.

Crown loss at 24 doesn't bode well for the future. I think I'm headed for NW6/7 I have a lot working against me looks-wise- gah!

It's not too noticeable yet, luckily- hopefully fin will help things out a bit.

I'd rather be a thick NW3 than a NW1 with a bald spot.

I agree with the OP, crown loss is the very definition of balding. I didn't notice hairline recession before I noticed my own loss, but everyone notices a bald spot.

I noticed baldness, but I never paid attention to it. It simply didn't matter.

Now it does which is weird. If I didn't care before, why do I care now that others might care about my own? Our psyche is an odd one thats for sure.

But actually what I've found myself doing is looking at other balding guys and making a judgement whether it looks good on them. Whether they hold it right or whether they should shave it off/do something different. Basically trying to imagine myself in the coming years heh

Call it a man crush lol, but there was a guy at my local indoor climbing gym the other day who was basically NW 6-7 but his head shape, athletic tone and shape of his face he wore it great. His head was clean and a bit shiny, looked like maybe a week or two stubble growth.

That's not that weird tbf. Since I've been growing bald I find myself constantly looking for bald role models and guys who wear their baldness in style, whilst I'm dismissive of other guys who run around with like the worst comb overs and who insist on wearing it long despite having all sorts of weird bald spots revealing themselves. I think we're all looking for people we can reflect to.

I do often find that most guys pulling it off are either immensely buffed or have a darker skin, so that's kind of a bummer.
