    Default Rosemary Extract

Hello, I'm new here. I have been playing around with the idea of making my own rosemary extract at home to block DHT using rosemary extract, since I read a study (this one: https://tahomaclinic.com/Private/Art...%20extract.pdf ) that says that it can block the enzyme that helps testosterone convert to DHT by up to 94.6%, depending on dosage.

In an attempt to understand how they created their extract, I researched and came up with this in laymen's terms: they took a 50% ethanol/50% water solution (500 mL), 50 grams of rosemary leaf (not sure if fresh or dry, I wish I knew) and boiled it in a closed off condenser/distiller of sorts so it wouldn't evaporate for a couple hours, strained it, then used some kind of vacuum pressure reducer to evaporate the ethanol/water out so only a condensed dry extract was left in the amount of 12.8 g.

Why does this matter? Well, a lot of people online believe this study is proof rosemary ESSENTIAL OIL blocks DHT, but this study pertains to the EXTRACT of rosemary, not the oil. I researched and the isolated ingredient they found doesn't seem to be in the essential oil.

Please forgive me if I am wrong. I am trying to navigate the world of scientific language. So this is just based on my personal understanding of what I've read from a few studies. Right here is part of the study that stands out: As an active constituent of 5a-reductase inhibition, 12-methoxycarnosic acid was identified with activity-guided fractionation.

From what I take it, that means the DHT blocking ingredient in the rosemary extract is 12-methoxycarnosic acid. BTW, 12-methoxycarnosic acid is also found in Salvia Microphylla, also known as Baby Sage or Blackcurrant sage.

This is what I read somewhere else:

The further route of structural diversification in rosemary diterpenes comes through methoxylation and hence the 12-methoxyl derivative of carnosic acid (14) and 11,12-dimethoxy isorosmanol (15) have been identified. Methoxylation at the 7-position is also evident as 7-methoxy-rosmanol (10) has been identified from rosemary [51]. All these diterpenes are relatively polar and are not found in the essential oil of rosemary [59].

So I might be a bit rash for assuming this since the spelling is not identical but I am pretty sure that the "12-methoxyl derivative of carnosic acid" is the same as the 12-methoxycarnosic acid mentioned in the hair growth study. And if so, it is not found in the essential oil, as stated above. The only thing would be if somehow "12-methoxyl derivative of carnosic acid" was not the same as 12-methoxycarnosic acid.

I hate science, I really do. Lol.

Also, everytime I look up 12-methoxycarnosic acid, all I get is studies on the extract of rosemary. The essential oil never comes up. Also, I'm assuming that since they made an extract and not an essential oil in the DHT mice study, that 12-methoxycarnosic acid is a compound specific to the extract of rosemary leaves. I think that is important because a lot of people are using rosemary essential oil, based on the enormous amount of websites using the two interchangeably and incorrectly recommending the essential oil for DHT blocking, not the extract.

I just can't find anything that says 12-methoxycarnosic acid is in rosemary essential oil. Then again, the language is so confusing to me I'm not even certain 12-methoxycarnosic acid is the dht blocking ingredient, lol. I can only try to decipher as best I can. In the end I have good reason to go with an extract because I at least KNOW that it blocks DHT based on the study, whereas there's no proof the essential oil does.

I'm currently trying to figure out how much they put on each mouse to get the results they did on blocking DHT. So annoying how hard it is to find basic information.

I think the best solution available right now to hair loss is stopping it before it starts so I'm very interested in DHT blockers. Anyone else interested in rosemary extract or has used it?

Also, I just thought it was worth mentioning that rosemary essential oil is in fact reported to help with hair loss in a mechanism similar to minoxidil. It helps increase circulation and is good for nerve damage, according to some studies, which can help speed up and increase hair growth that isn't highjacked by DHT. I just don't think that it helps to prevent future hair loss like the extract does, which is more similar to Finasteride. The essential oil doesn't block DHT (atleast I haven't read it does from any scientific sources). I think it could help in combination with the extract though to improve results.
