    Default Hello my balding brethren

First off I wanted to say, my heart goes out to those who had to deal with this disease at a much younger age. I can not even begin to imagine what that would be like. I always kinda knew that I would go bald, but I survived my early 20's.

So without wasting anyone's time, I will start with my "story" .. I am almost 29, been losing my hair for past 5-6 years. But it has gotten worst in the past few months, to the point where I cant hide it with any hairstyles or any styling product.

I have started using the hairmax laser comb, I realize there are quite a lot negative reviews about it on this site. But I wanted to give it a try anyways.( I am desperate ) Worst comes to worst, I can always send it back within 20 weeks. I am putting some pics up, and will be posting new pics time to time. And maybe we all can decide if laser comb is working or not. I am also open to trying other alternatives available. But I kinda want to stay away from any medications that could possibly effect my sexual life. Just got married 4 months ago !!

At this time, I am thinking about going to a specialist and see where I stand with my hair loss. I was hoping if you kind folks would help me figure out a few things :

    1. Anyone know of a good doctor in Denver, Colorado ?
    2. Is it too early for me to get a HT ? Do I have to wait till I actually go bald ?
    3. where do you think I measure on Norwood scale ?
    4. Also if I do decide to go with a HT, how long the results last ?

P.S. I am putting pics of wet and dry hair.

Welcome to the forum. I don't know of any specialists in the Denver area. I do agree that seeing one would probably be a good idea if you want a miniaturization test done.

I would say you are roughly a Norwood 2+ anterior, and a Norwood 3/4 diffuse vertex. You have a pretty strong, mature hairline. For 29, you're not doing too badly.

I will just say that the problem with transplants is that you usually have to get 'maintenance' procedures done in the future as your hair loss progresses. Transplants do help people, however, so the decision would be yours. I had a consultation back in 2001 and came very close to doing it. I decided not to do it because I was too bald, and the result would have been crap. A third reason was the risk.

With regard to meds, many transplant doctors put patients on propecia after a procedure to slow down the progression. The rate of progression, donor area, finances, your personal 'hair' goals etc. all factor into the equation. There are things to think about.

Oh and congratulations on your wedding.

    Hey thanks for the reply.

Hey weedwacker, what risks were you worried about getting a HT ?
I am seriously considering it, nothing too crazy just to fill in the areas where the baldness is most obvious.

I have called and made an appointment with Dr. James Harris in CO and also called Dr. Alan Feller in NY. ( heard some great things about Dr Feller. )

The appointments I am getting are in mid July. In the mean time can I start using Rogaine and taking Propecia . Or should I wait till I consult the doctors ?

And I am aware of the maintenance procedure I would have to get, as I am sure my hair loss will continue. But I am thinking getting a HT , would help me make it to my mid or late 30s. And I can hopefully get another one then .. or by some God's miracle we will have a better alternative by then :-)

And UK, I will keep an eye on that product. Have you used it or do you know anyone who did ?

Rupi, it sounds as though you are on the right path. You are smart because you are researching your options. Having consultations with a good transplant doctor is a good idea.

As far as risks are concerned, I am talking about the financial uncertainty of transplants. I was 24 when I considered the procedure and I didn't know how much money I would have needed to invest in the future. The second risk was the scar. If you get a strip procedure, you will likely be left with a(in some cases rather noticeable) scar. Now, however, FUE is being done which is different from the strip procedure. 2001 is very different from 2011.

You may want to schedule an appointment with a dermatologist to discuss meds. I don't have any personal experience with meds because I began doming before any viable drugs were available. Sorry I can't help you there.

Lastly I will say that, when all was said and done, a transplant would not have been a good option for me. My procedure was quoted at 15K; I was going to pay in cash. Given the expense for limited results(because I was a NW 6) it was not worth it financially. If I am going to pay 15-45K for a 'hair' procedure, it had better be a cure! You, on the other hand, are not that bald - so you may be able to obtain great results that would change your life for the better.

Hi Rupi, I was at about NW3 Vertex when I first considered HT a few years back (I was 28). I didn't have great results from the surgery, of all the grafts that were put in, only about 200 hairs regrew and I constantly was having numbness and headaches on my scalp in the following year. Overall, it was expensive, with minimal results and I personally don't believe it was worth the money or effort or the emotional stress thereafter. I am now using various types of hair concealers and am pretty satisfied with using cosmetic/temporary solutions for now.

Hey PabloR, thanks for writing. Where did you get your surgery from ? Did you lose any more hair from the "shock" ?

Your experience really contradicts with all the pics I see on here of patients who had HT done. Now, I am certainly not very attractive to the HT , and will only use it as a last resort.

And Weedwacker, I hear you that is can be expensive and would require to invest further in future. But quite honestly, I just want to make it to my 40s and not be classified as a bald guy. After that I couldn't careless and neither would my wife :-)

However, do you think once I get it , I will be forced to get more. Since they say the transplanted hair are DHT proof and wont fall off. And I def wont want to have hair left on hairline and nothing behind it ...

Rupi, I completely understand you not wanting to be a bald guy. None of us likes it. If your goal is to try to maintain a youthful appearance until your 40s, I completely understand that.

I think the issue is not whether the transplanted hairs would continue to grow; the issue is having to get more procedures in the future because of continued hair loss. Even if your transplanted hair continues to grow, you may have to get more work done.

Life is short and you're only young once. I think a transplant is worth it if the results are good. Sometimes you have to take risks in life in order to get to where you want to be. If you can preserve your youth until your 40s, why not? Unfortunately, there is no guarantee of a good result - but if you go to a reputable doctor, the chances are better.
