    red bumps on scalp
    hello fellow members,

I have a few red pimple-like bumps on my scalp in various places...

I'm not using any topicals but my scalp does itch...

have any of you experienced this? do you think this is a sign of inflammation and a part of my hairloss?

    thanks, FTL

Interesting. I've had the same thing on-and-off. The reason I even noticed is I'd comb my hair and strike one (they're quite sensitive). I never had that issue prior to hair loss either.

Maybe we have oily scalps? I have no idea what to do about it.

I have had these every now and again and thought it was the topical i was using i tried using ramatroban with a syringe and injected some ram into these spots on top of scalp some spots were where hair follicles are and next day they were gone so the ramatroban must calm this inflamation down.

I had these and I figured it was because I was using Nizoral too often, after I stopped it they went away. I am now just using it once a week, so it could be to do with inflammation.

I was thinking about maybe trying adenosine, or maybe CB for this...I guarantee it's an inflammation problem...

I don't want to stop using nizoral every 3 days because my scalp is oily.

I've had these lately as well. I just started Propecia 4 months ago. I've been using nizoral 2% once a week for the last 2 months.

Im not sure if I had these spots before propecia. If I did, they were considerably smaller.

I'm not sure propecia is working for me...and I heard an oily scalp, accelerated hair loss, and red bumps were a sign of reflex hyperandrogenicity.

Is there any truth to that? Considering if I should discontinue propecia for a while.

This is what it looks like. Itchy+hair falls out in the area.

I have had the same type of experience actually. I decided to continue propecia because I know what's going to happen to me if I get off.

I would not judge propecia on shedding, take baseline and regular pics. These "androgenic" side effects seem to be much rarer than the sexual sides people get.

Reflex hyperandrogenicity happens with antiandrogens, but not supposed to happen with 5ARi's, and your follicles are going to be protected by finasteride even if T bumps up.

    Thanks for your response.

Is there any tests to determine if I have 'reflex hyperandrogenicity'. Should I get my T levels checked?

Should I try lowering my dose? Or will these symptoms likely disappear over time.

I'm not sure how checking hormone levels will help you really, so I don't think it's necessary.

I don't think RH is even supposed to happen with MPB, if I am not mistaken. I would just wait and see I guess.

In a sense what I mean is that some tissues in the body might raise androgen receptor levels to compensate for reduced DHT, but nothing has shown the same thing happening in the HF - which is shrinking due to androgens unlike the prostate, which is enlarging. I suspect your hair should do fine.

I was taking 1 mg of propecia w/o tapering on for about 3.5 months , and I was having some intrusive sides (itch, oil, etc.). I lowered my dose to .83 mg per day 2 weeks ago and my skin has become very dry and my itch is 95% gone, but I'm still shedding. I'm very mindful of the power that the mind can play with side effects, but I'm a firm believe my lower dose has had a positive impact. Now just time to pray for some future growth, because I have shed probably 40% of my hair.
Give it a couple weeks at a lower dose--who knows, maybe your body will react better.

It could be folliculitis or dermatitis which is in and of itself an inflammation of the follicle shaft whether the red bumps are ingrown hairs looping back and growing down into the scalp which would mean you would need a warm wash rag to be applied and then perhaps a lancing and tweezing out of the hair trapped inside. Or you might need to apply TSal - or TGel from Neutrogena which has a coal tar which soothes the scalp from inflammation process giving it a chance to heal.
