Turning 21, noticed a bald spot
Hey all! I'll be turning 21 in a few months. Recently noticed a sort of thinning/balding(?) spot around the vertex of my head. I've always had kind of thin hair but I definitely have never noticed this.

I looked back at some candid pictures from about a year ago, and I definitely think this is new. No one has ever mentioned it (though I'm not sure why they would). I'm just really surprised given how fast this seems to have come on. The more I look at it the more I think it's pretty noticeable. I wear my hair long and this is just going to ruin everything about my look.

In terms of family stuff my dad has a big old male pattern bald spot but a fine hairline. My mom's brother has a full head of hair and my maternal grandfather has thin old person hair but doesn't seem MPB-ish.

I'm also hugely stressed and don't sleep enough and don't eat right and drink/smoke too much. So, basically I'm an average college student. Could it be environmental stuff? I've sort of read that most people on these forums discount that but thought I'd ask.

    Anyway here's some pictures

I think my hairline is fine but I'm not the best judge. The one side looks weird because I had kind of a Skrillex undercut thing going on and I'm trying to let it grow back out, hence the unevenness.

Anyway, let me know what you all think! Thanks!!!

Environmental stuff, like the factors you've mentioned, only play a very minor role, if any. The pattern in which you are losing your hair is very typical of MPB. I would meet with a dermatologist and consider getting on fin, minoxidil and nizoral shampoo.

It definitely looks like you have some thinning. Now I have a question for you. Are you willing to do anything about it?

Notcoolanymore - A+ on the phrasing of this. This is should always be asked before people start suggesting things.

You are 100% balding and will be full blown bald by 30, unless you take action.

If you decide your hair is important for you and you want a chance at saving it, finasteride/propecia is your one and ONLY option. Do your research but please do not waste time using anything other than finasteride in hopes it will save your hair. If you don't want to use fin you could try minox maybe you will be a great responder and it will give you some extra years of hair.

    It looks like NW-3/4.
Surely, unhealthy lifestyle habbits can affect your hair health and can lead to hair loss, however in your case it looks like MPB.
It is time to start taking Finasteride.

Are you crazy? That is definitely a NW2-2.5 with diffuse thinning. Get on the Big 3 M8

I won’t be disagree on environmental part playing a role in hair loss, however, combination of your family history and current hair status warrant an inspection by qualified dermatologist

marzipanlies has long hair, but if he cuts it shorter, his NW 3/4 will be much visible. His vertex is very thin (http://i.imgur.com/PbijPX7.jpg), and on this photo http://i.imgur.com/pWZSVxi.jpg it is seen that his hairline recedes. To be more specific, it looks like NW 3V.
