Hair loss from androgenic birth control - AGA or TE
Hi, I am 30 and have hairloss that I believe came from stopping and restarting Seasonale birth control. I was on it for 10 years with no issues and tried to stop in winter 2015. Stayed off for 5 months but got bad cystic acne that my wouldn't go away and went back on it summer 2015. Feb 2016 noticed my hair was thinning and went to my dermatologist and did bloodwork - all normal. Derm said tell gen effluvium. Decided to stay on the pill and watch it. No noticeable changes and thought it had stabilized. Moved cities and jobs and bought a house since then and have been stressed and busy. This fall noticed it was getting dryer and a little coarser but just changed conditioners. The last 2 months it has dramatically changed - shedding, texture thin, dry and like cotton candy. Hair looks completely unhealthy and bad. And scalp dry and itchy. Did more bloodwork and thyroid, iron, testosterone, and vitamins within ranges. Dermatologist ( different one this time) said telegen effluvium. Stopped Seasonale and started spironolactone per doctor but concerned what else to do. Whether to get scalp biopsy to know if it's AGA or not and if I should stay off birth control or switch. No history of AGA in my family but scared that the androgenic birth control did it and I have the signs especially this texture change and more thinning. Any advice?? Could it be reversible with treatment??
