    Hairline lowering (advancement)
    Hi,

i'm a 25 year old woman from Germany and I had a few questiona about a surgical hairline lowering procedure.
First of all I would like to know how much it would cost to have a hairline advancement (I'd like to lower my hairline about 1,5 and max. 2 cm),
that being a one stage procedure. I can't find any pricelists online.
I am from Germany so what would be the best way to go about the procedure in terms of how long not to fly etc.
I've also read that you will be 'hospitalized' for one day, is that true?
Also, what type of sutures are used, so would I have to come back to have them removed? And how long does the procedure generally take?
Also I would like to know if anyone on this forum has had this procedure and how it went.

A lot of questions i know, but you can never be prepared enough right!:)

For hairline advancement, you will probably need to actually call around to clinics to get specific pricing information. It is an outpatient procedure and will not require hospitalization; the procedure is performed under intravenous sedation and local anesthesia. You should be able to return home one or two days after surgery and sutures will be removed after 4-7 days (I imagine you could have a local physician back home remove them for you if necessary). There are a couple of drawbacks to this procedure, namely scarring along the hairline, though this will likely be hidden as hair grows and the wound matures. You also might experience some distortion in hair growth angles following a hairline advancement procedure.

Another option to achieve a lower hairline would be grafting, or hair transplantation.

Hope this information helps- let me know if you have any additional questions.

    Hi,
    thanks for answering my questions.
I did want to do a hairtransplantation at first, and I researched it and diffrent clinics for about a year and a half when the last clinic I was going to for a consult told me that I wasn't a fit patient as I have a very high density of my own and they wouldn't be able to reconstruct such a high density.
So there would be a visible diffrence in density in the new hairline and my original.
So basically a hairline advancement is my only option left, and I now prefer it over the ht due to the quick recovery. And yes, the scar is a downside but everything has a down side and I feel like I should just take a risk on this one as my huge forehead is really bothering me.
But to come back to the point, I did have some other questions.
First of all will a bit of the hairline be shaved? (I think I read that somewhere) and if so how much?
Also, how long will it take before you can exercise again? And how long before you can properly wash and comb your hair? (I got curls and a lot of hair so when I comb it's really like pulling very hard on my hair, despite using a lot of conditioner:o)

    Another option
As someone who has worked with both hair restoration physicians and facial plastic surgeons, I have seen the question of hairline lowering come up frequently.

Dr. McAndrews would consider hair transplants for you as long as you understand that in order to achieve a satisfactory density, it would take at least 2 sessions of hair restoration a minimum of 9 months apart. Each session will take 9 - 12 months to fully grow in. Most patients, like you, want a more immediate result and are not willing to endure the thin look until the 2nd procedure fully grows in.

One thing you could consider is a combination of procedures. The best plastic surgeons use a trichophytic closure. This is a special type of incision/closure that allows hair to grow through the incision to cover it. This does help to conceal the scar, however many women still want to keep their natural soft hairline. Hair transplants are often used to soften the hairline after a lowering procedure. Just something to consider....

I'm really questioning whether I would get the right density with a ht. I had my mind set for a ht for allmost 2 years, and I have to admit, that even then I was wonderen how to cover the whole thing up. I don't see how I could do that for let's say 2 years (that being having 2 sessions and waiting for the hairs to grow).
But like you said, having a combination of the procedures could be better. So I intend to have the hairline lowering procedure and later, I will asses my hairline and scar, if the scar is still too visible even after maturing a little I plan to have a minor ht to plant some grafts in my scar/hairline.

It is also hard to really see what the scar will be like. Just going by pictures isn't ever ideal. But as I said I have to fly in so I don't really have much of a choice. The problem is that I have yet to see a picture of a hairline lowering procedure, that is a good close-up with the hairs combed back. All I see are pictures from a distance with hairs combed over the scar.
So with that one, if anyone has close-up pictures, please post them!

    Thanks in advance!!

    Lou-Anne,

I wish I could be more help but Dr. Cole doesn't do these procedures so my knowledge of them is quite limited. My understanding is that the scar will be virtually undetectable and, if it is something that bothers you, you can have some additional hair transplanted there to soften the look later on (as you and RobinSigismondi mentioned). Best wishes with the rest of your research and your eventual procedure!

By the way, you might want to try posting a similar topic in one of these female-oriented threads and see if you get some more responses:

I would think that if your current hairline is very thick, having a hair transplant to lower you hairline, might not work out too well. Even if the surgeon can recreate 50% of your original density it might look thin compared to your original hairline. Do you have any images you can post to show us where your current hairline is? It might not be as high as you think. Unless your hairline is abnormally high, it seems like you are taking a bit of a chance having surgery to correct something that might not need to be corrected.
    Just my 2 cents.

    Hi,
What you said about the density is exactly what they told me on my last consult so that's why I now am considering a hairline advancement.
My hairline is about 8cm above my eyebrows, and I have an M-shaped hairline. I want to keep my M-shape, and I don't need a tiny forehead which wouldn't suit me anyway. But the combination of that really makes it big and masculine. And it sucks when your forehead is the first thing people notice about you.
And I feel like everyone on this forum is taking a chance, no matter what procedure you take. And there doesn't pass a day without me stressing about my forehead, and having to face the pictures is even worse.
There is a whole history behind my desicion as I think is with most of the people on this forum (if not all).
Trust me I'm not someone who needs to be picture perfect. But this has affected me for over 10 years now, and I want to be able to wake up one day and not have to worry about it!
I want to do this so I don't have to look at my forehead everyday, not so I can look at it and think how pretty it is:).
But thanks for your comment and I definitely understand your point as I (eventhough I don't know their history) have seen a lot of pictures of women who did the procedure who in my opinion really didn't need it. And when i say really, i mean really:eek:.
But like I said, everything has a history.

    Hairline lowering
I jUST had a consult with Dr. Kabaker on this procedure. I am a 30 yr old african american woman suffering from traction alopecia and a high hairline. I intially went to Dr, Kabaker for a hair transplant consult. I recently saw a top hairplant surgeon prior to seeing Dr, Kabaker that explained the risk of hair transplants with my hair texture. (Afro kinky hair). Gr. Baker agreed. Dr. kabaker showed me pics of his clients with this procedure done and the results were amazing and half the cost of transplants! I am now leaning more towards this procedure as the risk of having a succusful transplant with my texture are too much of a gamble for me. Not too mention the time for the grafts to grow. The Dr also mentioned a possible combination procedure for grafts for more fullness if desired. I have big forhead and a scar that has always bothered me so i feel i am geting three procedured in one!

A hairline lowering procedure is kind of like a reverse brow lift so I’m assuming their can be complications if not done properly. I have read that Dr. Kabaker specializes in this procedure so you should do well if you choose to do it. Did he discuss the possibility of keloid scaring since you are genetically a little more prone being of African decent?
You should post some pictures here so some of the experts can give you some more opinions.

    hairplease,

If you opt for this procedure with Dr. Kabaker, you will certainly be in capable hands. Dr. Cole has told me that Dr. Kabaker is one of the most experienced and very best at hairline lowering.

I will put some pictures up tonight. I have met with Dr. Kabaker for a 2nd time. I am leaning more and more to this procedure to correct my traction alopecia. From my research online. Dr. Kabaker is the best at this. Second would be two Dr's in Southern Ca that he personally trained. The dr. measured the distaance of my hairline to the bottom of my forhead at a whopping 9cm. The average woman is 5-7cm. I figure I am killing to birds with one stone. I will have a smaller more femine forhead and my hairline back for 50% of the cost of transplants. And the results are instant.

My major concern at this point is the scar. I am not prone to keloids so I am hoping that would not be a problem. I have had stitches three times(Tomboy) and no keloids. I am also concerned with any distortation of my facial features. I.e crazy raised brows. At this point, I dont think a transplant will be a succesful. I am prone to ingrown hairs and I have very, very thicke coily hair. I am fearful that either the transpalnts will not grow through or it will take multiple, sessions and time for the hair to acheive the density of the rest of my hair.

My forehead is about 8 to 9 cm too! I've researched dr. Kabaker too and I find he would be an excellent choice. When I have the finances to have to procedure I am going with dr. Epstein though, out of all the dr's I've researched I found him to suit me the most. But it will be some time before I have the money.
I would really like to know how the procedure went for you if you don't mind updating? Have you set a date yet?

    Hi,
It's so nice to hear from someone who is actually in the process of getting it done! I'm so happy for you!! For how long has the expander been in place now? I hope you don't have to 'wear' it much longer! You said you've talked to others who had it done. Is their scar still visible?...
Anyway please keep us updated :D I'm so excited to hear about your experience!! And again I'm so happy for you so good luck!!

Thanks..I had my consultation March 1, my expander was put in place March 2nd. I get my staples taken out on Tue.March 15th and I am also getting my first injection that day. I have to wear it until the end of May. It is really no problem though. At this point you annot see the expander, it is really no problem at all. I saw 3 other people who had the surgery and I CANNOT SEE A SCAR. I am guessing this is because the doctor buries the hair follicles so hair grown back through the incision. I am so happybecause I have been wanting this surgery forever. I hate my forehead and I am glad there is help for me. I was awake when the expander was put in. I felt no pain during surgery. Once the anestisia wore off I had the worst headache but with the meds I was fine. Are you gettingv the surgery?

Well that means that this summer you will be walking around with a perfectly sized forehead!! Some sunscreen and you are good to go! I'm so happy for you!! I mean these days time flies by so you'll be your 'after' story in no time! I really want the surgery, however I still have to save over half of the money for the procedure. Thankfully I don't have to have an expander so that will save me a lot of money. But since I am in college and pay for everything myself I'm just not able so save as much or as fast as I wanted:( At best I will be able to have the procedure just before 2012, maybe somewhere in october or november. And that's at best!!
Also I'll be flying to the states from europe, since the best at this procedure are in the states. So that will add about 1000 just on a plane ticket. Ugh
I read in your above post you will be getting staples with the actual hairline lowering procedures, why not sutures? Oh and did/will they give you some sort of chillpill to take the morning of surgery before you came in, or did they give you one after you came in?

Oh btw, I'm soooooooooo happy you couldn't see their scars!!!!!!:D:D:D That was one of my biggest fears!

    Hope all is/goes well!

You are so right, this summer I will have a perfect forehead and guess what I will also be 30. That is really good that you don't need an expander that will save time and money. It took me years to save so I understand that :-) I had to fy to CA I spent $450.for hotel and flight and when I go back it will be $1000. For hotel and flight..so expensive :-( I actually don't know why I got staples, I never asked. I actuall did get all my meds the day before surgery, I just didn't take them until right after the surgery. I had 4 different meds..antibiotic..pain meds..something for swellingand a pill for nausea..They d not play..I actually got the staples taken out today because my head was itching..lol..I get my first injection tomorrow and I am so excited. You are very lucky that you only need a one step procedure, my scalp is tight and I want it moved down quite a bit. Also I am getting a nose job when I go back..all at one time..saves $$$$ I am going to be a whole new person come June :-)

Hello..well all is going we'll. I get my injections on Wed. And Sat. And my friend has become a professional she knows exactly what she is doing and does it in no time. It took a minute to get it perfect because one time she had to stick me 3 times :-( because we could not get blew dye. You can't slant the neddle when injecting it has to be straight down and once you hit the bottom you pull back to make sure you get blue dye the dr put blue dye in there so we know its the right spot. Girl its weird, its like having a balloon with water in your head..whenever I move, it moves..sometimes I move just so the saline moves..lol.. Ok so to the important stuff..do you know it has only been one month since I had surgery and you CANNOT barley see the scar unless u were all in my face and I pointed it out to u, and my hair has already grown back in frnt of the scar..so imagine how great it will look when he actually buries the hair follicles. I see that one of the mainconcers with this surgery I the scar but imine looks great and I think the people who have problems probably went to somene who DID NOT know what they were doing..I can't wait until this is over..I'm so ready to hear about your experience :-)

Wow almost 3 weeks already!! So glad to hear you're doing good. I am so happy your scar isn't really visible and probably won't be after everything has healed up nicely and your hairs have grown back.
And you're right, you have been cut open so you're gonna notice something hahah.
Hope the nose is doing okay now, just keep in mind that when it's all healed up those few weeks of maintenance will seem like nothing, and it'll be sooooo worth it!!
Did taking out the staples and stitches hurt? That's basically the only part of the whole procedure where I'm kind of scared that it'll hurt. I mean they're basically pulling stuff out of the deep layers of your skin.... Ohh also what did you do the first few days after surgery, did you travel home right after? and how was it to travel? I seriously have so many questions haha I hope you don't mind:o...
What I also really wanna know is how the whole day went, like what time you had to be at the clinic, how the anesthesia went, how was it when you woke up and how was the rest of the day and night....
Uhm also did you use anything to cover up your head when going back to your hotel>?
Hah I have more questions but you can only have so many words hahaha, anyway can't wait to hear from you and I'm so happy to hear you have no regrets!! :D

Taking the stitches out did not hurt at all, nor did the staples. I felt no pain. Girl do't be scared. I went on youtube and people said they cried when stitches came out of their nose and hairline, but it did not hurt me at all. After the surgery a recovery facility picked me up called Pearl and they charge $775. per night so I stayed there intil the next day when it was time for me to go back to the doctor. They really took care of me, they gave me my meds, took me to the bathroom, lol, cleaned me up. Most of this wont be an issue for you though because the hairline required really no work. They cleaning is basically the nose..ugh.. After surgery, they covered my head with whatever that white wrapping thing is they use so my entire head stayed covered for the first two days. Then after that, i went back and they removed it but i still had the stitches and staples in of course. i only stayed at the recovery facility for 1 night and then i went back to my hotel. You have to either have someone go with you or stay at the facility. You have to stay in town for 6 days. I had surgery on a Tuesday and that Monday they took the stitches out and i flew home later that evening. Really, you wont even be well enough to fly, this is a major surgery. i was tired..all I did was sleep for the 3/4 days after surgery, I didnt have energy to do anything until Sunday, ha..lol

the anestisiologist called me the night before surgery to talk to me and basically tellme not to eat after mid night and it is general anestisia, a tube did my breathing for me and everything, lol. I saw horror stories on youtube about coming out of anestisia and it was nothing like that. i came out fine i was tired and they had to help me ionthe wheelchair, but i was good though. My surgery was 4 hours because i got both at the same time. My surgery was at scheduled 6:15 am and he started at about 8:00 finished at noon . When I got to pearl, I was tired so i basically slep all day and ate, used the bathroom , and watched a little bit of tv. They use an ice pac on my face, for swelling and I took meds every 4 hours. i felt NO PAIN THE ENTIRE PROCESS, NONE!!!

i had to wash my hair after they took off the dressing, girl it was so much mess cacked in my hair..blaood and god knows what else and of course u dont want 2 wash because u are healing, i am still numb and i just let the water run on the top of my head..i really dont comb it because i am still healing and i dont want to hurt myslef or interrupt hair follicles trying 2 grow..lol..i can see the little baby hairs comign in, lol ha

Ask away, i wish i had someone to ask when I was going through this.

    I'm glad you didn't feel any pain... that's a relief!! :D
Pearl sounds like a very good idea when travelling alone, but 775$ is expensive! But I guess once you do something like this, you better do everything right no matter what the cost.

Anyway, how are you doing now? Back to work and everything? I hope everything is healing well... Do you like feel more comfortable in your skin?? Like when you wear your hair in a bun or a ponytail or something...
Oh also, do you think it's possible to have this procedure without it afterwards being obvious to people? Have people said something about it eventhough you hadn't told them (yet)? I really want to have this procedure, but I really don't want anyone (besides a few) to know!! But I'm affaird it might be obvious, eventhough I want to lower my hairline less than an inch (which seems little right, but makes such a big freaking difference!!!).

You said you didn't really wash your hair which I can totally understand haha, seems scary to me as well to have to do that after a procedure like this! But what about possible infections? Are you able to keep your head clean enough without being able to wash and comb it properly? It's just another one of the horror scenes in my head where the antibiotics aren't enough and an infection occurs leaving a big rotting wound on my head:o...
Do you have to keep the incision site moist with antibiotic ointment or something or do you have to keep it dry at all times?

Thanks again for answering my questions, you're a big help.
Again I hope your healing up good and that your forehead (and nose) may do us proud!!!! hahahahaha

Hi, I'm curious to know how your procedure came out. Did you go through with it? I'm asking because I'm considering having the same procedure done, but not sure what doctor to use.
