laundry list of fin, dutast, nizoral, and big pharma Qs

I'm 21 and started losing my hair at 17. I started taking finasteride in April of last year, where the doctor gave me pills for the next 400 days. It's been 285 days (9.3 months) since I started and I haven't really noticed a ton of difference. Granted, I haven't maintained photographic evidence and only have my monitored my hairline and power alleys. If touch is any indication, I don't believe that the hair around the vertex of my head is being maintained by the medicine. The hairline is getting worse, but that was to be expected. I was thinking of trying Avodart or generic dutasteride. How much longer should I stay on the finasteride before I try something else? Would you feel comfortable taking the generic avodart or is brand name the way to go?

I started using Nizoral 1% about two weeks ago. If the hair that falls out in the shower is any indication, the shampoo is not keeping hairs in the telogen stage for very long. Does Nizoral 2% work better? If so, how much better?

Lastly, I was skimming a Vanity fair article on Pharmaceuticals holding lots of trials overseas. There have been"58,788 such trials in 173 countries outside the United States since 2000. In 2008 alone, according to the inspector general’s report, 80 percent of the applications submitted to the F.D.A. for new drugs contained data from foreign clinical trials. Increasingly, companies are doing 100 percent of their testing offshore. The inspector general found that the 20 largest U.S.-based pharmaceutical companies now conducted “one-third of their clinical trials exclusively at foreign sites.”

Some of the companies that sell these drugs may have gotten clinical data from countries that are more homogeneous then the US. Is it possible that they screen out candidates for the trials based on how bald their parents and relatives are? How big a grain of salt should I take with these trials?

Any responses, anecdotal or scientific, would be extremely helpful.
