Has Anyone Been to China or Considered Going There for Medical Treatment?

I currently work for a medical services company in Guangzhou, where I help connect international patients with hospitals across China. Over the years, I’ve worked with families from Malaysia, Singapore, the Middle East, Europe, and North America. Many of them had never considered China as a treatment destination at first, but after learning more about the available options, they eventually came to China for a second opinion or medical treatment.
One thing that has consistently surprised me is how little people outside China know about the country's healthcare system. Many people are familiar with Chinese manufacturing, high-speed rail, or technology companies, but know very little about China’s major hospitals, cancer centers, or specialist medical expertise.
From what I’ve seen, many top-tier hospitals in cities such as Beijing, Shanghai, and Guangzhou have extensive experience treating cancer, cardiovascular diseases, liver diseases, and performing complex surgeries. Because of the large patient volume, some specialists may see far more cases each year than their counterparts in many other countries.
Cost is also a major factor for many international patients. While expenses vary significantly depending on the disease, hospital, and treatment plan, many medical procedures in China are generally less expensive than comparable treatments in the United States.
That said, I’ve always wondered why, when people talk about medical tourism in Asia, they usually think of Japan, Singapore, or South Korea first, while China is rarely part of the conversation.
Is it because of language barriers?
Because international patient services developed relatively late?
Because visa and hospital processes are not transparent enough?
Or because Chinese hospitals have historically focused on serving domestic patients rather than actively promoting medical tourism?
I’d be very interested to hear other people’s perspectives.
Has anyone here received medical treatment in China, or seriously considered it? If so, what attracted you to the idea, and what concerns influenced your decision to go—or not to go?
I’d love to hear about your experiences. If it’s helpful, I can also share some of what I’ve learned through my work at DengYueMed and my experience helping international patients navigate the Chinese healthcare system.
