Hello and thanks for taking the time to read my story.

First and foremost, if you’re reading this, you, like I was, are experiencing hair loss. Let me be the first to say, I know your pain. Looking into a mirror every morning and seeing my youth slip away (Fall out in this case), was a painful process and something I decided to take action against.

Secondly, if you don’t know who Dr. Rawnsley is, PLEASE do some research and look into one of the best Dr.’s I have ever had the chance to encounter. He is one of a kind in this field, he has the name of UCLA behind him and quite frankly, employs one of the most knowledgeable/professional staffs around. Let me be frank, this isn’t a pitch, this also isn’t an intro to “FUE”, this is a step by step experience I had with a particular Dr.

Step #1 - Consultation/Office Space

After doing some serious research, I decided I would book a consultation. I had read a bunch of reviews raving about Dr. Rawnsley and his staff and decided he was a perfect fit. I currently reside in San Francisco and even though there are plenty of FUE specialists here, I wanted the best of the best. At the end of the day, this is a procedure on your head/looks. This is not something you go looking for discounts on. Although a bit more premium with regards to expenses, you get what you pay for.

At first impression, I was extremely pleased. Located basically on the UCLA campus in Westwood, Dr. Rawnsley’s office is an extension of his professional attitude. Clean, well lit, and modern, it’s something that reassures you he isn’t taking short cuts. When I opened the door I was pleasantly greeted by the Office Manager, Suzanne. She greeted me by my name, asked if I needed anything and was comfortable. After only waiting about 5-10 minutes, Dr. Rawnsley came out to greet me and bring me back.

The consultation was exactly what I’d hoped for. He took time to thoroughly answer my questions, make me feel relaxed and confident in this procedure and it’s benefits. I am in sales, I know what a pitch looks like, this was not a pitch in any form. Being 28 years old, we decided the best, most natural approach would be an FUE procedure. We set the date for September 10th and I was extremely confident I had made the correct decision.

Step #2 - FUE Hair Procedure (2500 Grafts)

The day of Surgery, I showed up to the UCLA buildings and met with Suzanne who happily added Dr. Rawnsley would be arriving shortly. I was introduced to the (2) nurses who would be assisting with the procedure. Like the rest of his staff, they were extremely professional and can say they were the closest thing to a well oiled machine 2 professionals can be. I was seated in the room and changed into my scrubs/robe. I would like to add everything is done in a private room. This surgery does not take place in any open-floor type area.

At this point, Dr. Rawnsley arrived and the procedure started with a him outlining my new hair line. After drawing my outline, one of the nurses shaved (buzzer with no guard, not razor blade) the donor area of my head (Back/sides). If you’re looking to avoid a slightly awkward haircut, I would recommend getting a military style cut before hand (Day Before).

Moving on, Dr. Rawnsley started numbing the area with local anesthesia. The only pain I really felt were the first (2) injections. After which he methodically worked his way back to prevent any more pain. Once completely numb, Dr. Rawnsley started creating my new hair line using an incision tool where the grafts would eventually be grafted. After about an hour, it was time for graft “Harvesting”. This is the most time consuming portion due to the fact that they’re literally carefully harvest each, individual hair follicle. Luckily, you get to comfortably lay on your stomach while the nurses work their magic.

After the donor area was completely done, I was allowed to turn over (You’re of course allowed to get up, stretch your legs and go to the restroom at any time) and sit up. At this point, both nurses/Dr Rawnsley methodically placed all my new grafts while I casually watched 2 episodes of Mad Men and Forest Gump.

As a sidenote, I was staying in an AirBNB which is a wonderful app designed to allow you to rent entire apartments/houses from awesome and accommodating people. I booked a wonderful, 1 bedroom apartment, 5-blocks away in westwood. The owner came by to drop off the keys and the nurses, making sure to avoid any awkward questions actually met the owner and got the keys for me.

All in all, the procedure took about 6.5/7 hrs. I would say there is of course some discomforts involved but Dr. Rawnsley and team did everything in their power to completely eliminate those moments.

After everything was done, my head was carefully wrapped. I was personally walked out by one of the nurses and she helped me find my car. With pretty much no pain, I drove to my apartment, made some tea, watched television and took some of the sleeping medications I was prescribed. Needless to say, I slept like a baby!!

I will be updating this over the coming months and am excited to share my new, youthful hair with you all! Please feel free to reach out with any questions you have and I will do my best to answer them.
