View Full Version : Just started minoxidil

Hey I just started using minoxidil 5% twice per day. I'm 19 years old and possibly have some thinning in the crown, but it's not noticeable, and I have recessions in the front. I'm also using ketoconazole 2% twice a week.

I was happy to start minoxidil because I felt like I was doing something about my hair loss, but have recently become nervous about the possible side effects. I've read that it can age users very quickly, and lead to dark circles.

How prevalent are these side effects? Is there anything I can do to avoid them? Most stories I've heard online show that the skin effects are generally reversible, but is there anything in particular I should be looking out for?

Advice would be great, but just so everyone knows I've talked to my doctor about propecia and I'm not interested.

Yeah, Rogaine/Minoxidil seems to age the skin. It gives me those old age spots on my head where I apply it. Though these spots are not very visible unless I take a close up picture with flash on my head. They do go away if you stop using minoxidil because I have gotten them before when I was using Kirkland's liquid minoxidil and then I stopped using it and the spots went away in time. Now i'm using Rogaine and they came in weeks.

What I suggest you do is exactly what i'm going to start doing. Use Tretinoin [Retin-A] ointment on the spots that you apply minoxidil. Tretinoin is know as anti-aging ointment. It can slow skin aging and treat wrinkles. It also won't hurt to use because it can be used as a hair loss treatment as well, though I will not be using it for that. I'll see how things go.
