Dutasteride vs. Finasteride, dosage and price

    Hi everyone,

I've been using finasteride (1,25 mg p/d) since February, and I believe it did do something for me, but I was wondering if Avodart might work better. The problem is, it's quite expensive and I was wondering if it's possible to maybe take 0,5 mg of dutasteride every other day, I mean, it does have a very long half-life...is it possible to take dutasteride in combination with finsteride? finasteride everyday and dutasteride once in two days?

    Thanks!

Dr. McAndrews advises patients that if they are doing well with Finasteride, stick to it.

Dutasteride has not been studied in hair loss, so we don't know if it works the same, better or worse. He typically prescribes it for the small percentage of patients who don't respond well to Propecia. Dutasteride has a much longer half life in the body and has greater side effects. Definitely do not take both medications at the same time. It will not give you better results.

If you are still unsure, talk to a dermatologist who treats hair loss.

I don't think avodart/dutasteride should ever really be any option but perhaps a last resort. Rather try a topical antiandrogen or something that has been proven safe.
