Both Minoxidil and Finasteride work best for males in the vertex and/or mid-anterior areas, not the hair line. There is currently no treatment that works in the hair line for males, except hair transplant surgery.
Shedding is common with both Finasteride and Minoxidil. Shedding is part of the process of recovery, but it doesn't always happen. How much you will shed depends on how much of your hair follicles are damaged by DHT. There is no way for you to know ahead of time. There is no way for anyone to be able to answer this question on that.
It would be best for you to wait until after the event. However, now would be a good time to switch from your regular shampoo and conditioner to sulfate free shampoo and conditioner if you haven't already done so. It would also be a good idea to start using Nizoral A-D shampoo once a week.

Thanks Tracy.
I checked my shampoo. It is actually sulfate free already

Neutrogena.
I use this 95% of the time But I'm switching to 100%!
I hear Nizoral can have a similar shedding effect as Minox so I won't rush into that either.
I'm going to have to disagree, I think Minox can have just as much effect on hairline and temple as the top.
I've seen many pictures of great results in these areas.
Plus I read that the reason for this thought is just that the clinical trials were only on the top of the scalp so they can only make this claim officially.
Aside from that my understanding is that hair receding or "maturing hairline" is scientifically exactly the same phenomena as top balding (both natural, receding is just more common at earlier ages) so I see no reason why it would be any different.

Thanks that's a very helpful response.
Just made a more elaborate thread on this question before I read this post hoping for informative responses like this.
