20 Goin bald
Hey yalll, im almost 20, startin to go bald. I know I'll be pretty much completey bald in 5-6 years, based on family genetics and older brother. I dont want to touch propecia, not only because the possible side effects but just the principle of not wanting to mess with my hormones. Should I start on Rogaine? And If you can forecase your hairloss, why waste money with propecia/rogaine? Why not get a permanent transplant. Is their enough donor hair on the average bald guy to cover his hole head???? thanks manz

Well firstly if propecia works for you(there is a high chance it will) then it would semi-permanently halt your baldness for 5-10 years in the condition it is right now. It's fine if you don't want to go on that but please do not listen to extreme negativity on that specific drug. So if you don't have any side effects with it(which there is a 5-10% you will get them), you can essentially save 10+ thousand dollars that you would spend on a HT in a few years after alot of loss.
IF you're really set against propecia, start on rogaine and Nizoral, that may help regrow a slight amount of hair and will probably at least slow down the loss. In my case it slowed down the loss but after about 2 years it didnt really do much for me and I had to go on propecia, I'm pretty happy with propecia so far, no side effects and my hair loss has pretty much come to a halt(although it's only been a little over a month). btw I'm 20 as well.

Hello Dan and Rdawg,
Yes, Rogaine is effective but be sure not to cease with Rogaine as it will only lead to more hair loss in about 6 months. The effect is only temporary it may regrow you hair but minimal only since the absorption of minoxidil in normal scalp is lesser.

Thanks a lot for the comment rdawg. Propecia is something I prefer not taking, but I am still trying to learn a bit more about it. If it really gets to the point where I can't stand losing anymore hair, I may have to. I think I am going to start with Rogain and Nizoral first for a year or so, and see how that goes, what do you think?
In a perfect world, I would preserve what I have for 5+ years, possible get a HT to fix the receding hairline and bald spot if it becomes seriously noticeable, and hope the one of these companies can perfect hair cloning!

Hey Dan, If you care about your hair loss then don't wait to start treatment, because hair loss is inevitable if you have mpb. This will also give you time to see how your body reacts to rogaine and to improve whatever has been lost. Where are you balding?

But be careful of taking it Dan, rogaine might be contraindicated to you.

Rogaine is a waist of money. Even my doctor said Rogaine doesn't work. My dad used it for a year and it did not work at all. Really do you want to put a foam in your hair twice a day for the rest of your life? I've been on propecia for almost 5 months with no sides, and I still have a full head of hair. I started taking it as soon as I noticed my hair loss. All I do is pop a pill in the morning with my vitamins. It is easy. Propecia (if it works for you) will stop your hair loss and you'll keep what you have and maybe regrow a little what you lost. The longer you wait to get on it the more hair you'll lose. Not everyone suffers side effects. If you do simply get off it as soon as possible.

It's hard to say whether it works or not. Maybe it just slowed the hair loss but not totally stop it / reverse it. But that's the thing with Minoxidill - you'll never hear of a miracle case where someone regrew a full head of hair just by using the stuff.
If you are serious about hair loss then take Propecia. Minox and Nizoral are good supplements that many claim improves it. Also note that Propecia doesn't stop working after five to ten years - that's a lie. It works as long as you take it. It may just be that after five to ten years the hair loss has been gradual, yet at that stage you notice it a little more.
In any case, 90% of the time Propecia will stop or reverse hair loss. Also realise that risk of sides is statistically very low, and many times the sides resolve with prolonged use or stopping the drug. I took the risk and I believe it's going to pay off.
Strongly consider Propecia before going on Minoxidil. If you take Minox chances are you're going to have a shed making your hair even worse, and then you'll need to use it twice a day only to get minimal to SEEMINGLY (but maybe it is slowing hair loss) non-existent results.
I recommend if you are that afraid of sides, easing onto Propecia very slowly and build up into the 1mg a day. You could then try just Propecia for about a year to eighteen months and gauge the effectiveness of it then.

Yup I never heard anyone have full head of hair on Minox and maintain it just using a foam.

Hairline started to recede about 6 months ago, now I'm noticing a thinning spot in the crown. I don't see hair on my pillow or anything like that, but I do have skin problems (eczema) and scratch my head a lot and see hair when i do that. My bro is 4 years older and almost completely bald (luckily looks good with a shaved head).
