Default Finasteride (Propecia) Vs. Dutasteride (Avodart)

So, i've heard a little about Dutasteride and from what i've read it appears to be more effective than Finasteride when it comes to both preventing hair loss and suppressing DHT. Now i was just prescribed my first batch of 1mg propecia tablets and have paid for a 90 day supply already. What i dont understand is if Dutasteride seems to be more effective, why do most men not use it? wouldnt the logical thing to do is to stop *****footing with the fin and get on avodart if it truly is more effective?

Avodart doesn't have the same approval as fin, but I've seen evidence that it can be very effective in treating hair loss.

I'm 'trying' fin for a year, and if and when I feel it's not doing it's work, I'll switch up to Avodart.

Avodart apparently has a bit more of a kick than fin.

thats what my understanding of it was, so i dont understand why we're dicking around with fin when theres a potentially more potent drug out there for us to try. Like my hair loss is very minimal and im not gonna lie when i say im bordering Scorpion's level of obsession with it but im planning on throwing everything including the kitchen sink at this problem and doing so as soon as possible. I just discovered minor thinning at my crown 3 weeks ago and immediately jumped on 12.5% minoxidil + 1mg finasteride. a pic of my crown is in this thread ( http://www.baldtruthtalk.com/showpos...42&postcount=6 ). what im saying is why wait till its too late..? hell had i known i would have started losing my hair at 22, i would have done this crap as preventative measures years ago.

most people start on fin because most of the time its enough to maintain and possibly regrow miniturized hair. Also because dut is more powerful than fin, sides can be worse so always better to 'build up to it' by taking fin. Dut is also more expensive than fin and harder to get hold of. And, if fin starts to 'wear off' after some years then you can fall back on dut.

Just a few reasons why people take fin before dut!

If you think people are ****ing around by starting on finasteride instead of Dutasteride, then suggest you spend a bit more time researching before doing anything.

Hi Chrisis - I remember about 6 months back you were saying how you were going to start on Fin, are you still taking it? Did you see any regrowth?

there is absolutely no reason for dut since it inhibits both types of 5AR when you only need to inhibit 5AR2...

Dutasteride and finasteride (PROPECIA) are both 5-alpha-reductase (5AR) inhibitors. Both treatments work by inhibiting 5AR, the enzyme responsible for converting testosterone to dihydrotestosterone (DHT). DHT is the primary androgen in the prostate. It is a primary factor in the development and progression of benign prostatic hyperplasia (BPH) and other prostate diseases and is also a major cause of hair loss.

.5mg – 2.5mg of Dutasteride provides better results in hair maintenance/regrowth as opposed to Finasteride

However, the benefit likely comes from its higher inhibition of type II 5ar not its suppression of type I 5ar. Merck tested a specific type I 5ar inhibitor called “MK386″ in a human trial and found it had no effect on balding.

Jumping on the Dutasteride bandwagon before the Finasteride bandwagon is not a good idea. For most men Finasteride is enough to halt and even reverse MPB… In the off-chance your body becomes tolerant of Finasteride (over the years) you always have Dutasteride to fall back on…

Side-effects on Dutasteride may be more common, any such sides would last longer as the half-life of Dutasteride is much longer then Finasteride, and unlike type II 5ar type I 5ar *is* present in brain tissue. Finally, keep in mind that DHT is not an evil androgen that just causes hairloss. Various bodily functions benefit from DHT. Finasteride inhibits 65% overall DHT levels leaving 35% for your body to use (most of that 35% is from the type I 5ar that isnt a big factor in hairloss). Dutasteride inhibits 90% or more overall DHT levels leaving 10% or less for your body…

Basically, use Finasteride **first** and only resort to Dutasteride if you must – This is just my opinion

I did start yes, but had to quit it because I had serious side effects after only 2 months. Still trying to get back to normal. It wasn't long enough to make any difference to my hair so it's a big regret overall and a warning to anyone considering it.
