Minoxidil scalp irritation as a positive?

    Hi ladies and gents,

I was wondering if the scalp irritation that can be caused by minoxidil could have a positive effect in stimulating circulation in the scalp or is it just a negative side effect?

If so would this have any bearing on how well it works?

    Thoughts welcome.

It is a side effect. I had that when I was usin Regain 5% and I couldnt tolerate the itch so I stopped using it. Then later I found out that Dr.Lee's Xandox uses different type of solvent that would not cause such itchness...so I am now using ******* instead..and the result is pretty good.

Not a bad question. I think the irritation you are referring to is caused by micro injuries to the scalp. This can be accomplished by using the new scalp rollers or small gauge needles. These actually puncture the skin and cause a cascade of cellular activity below the surface. I think the irritation caused by Minoxidil causes a different type of reaction.

The irritation is caused by propylene glycol that contains in Rogain, approximately10% of the user will experience such side effect including myself. So i have switched to Dr. Lee's Minoxidil solution where it does not contain propylene glycol. But if u want to keep using products from Rogain, you can try using the Rogain Foam instead, where it doesnt contain propylene glycol also, so you can probably avoid the irritaion you are having rite now.

          Thanks Dr Charles

Would I be right in thinking that you see the irritation caused from minoxidil based products is a negative side effect of the treatment although you believe that scalp irritation, such as the controlled micro injuries of a scalproller, could be seen as a positive benefit?

          Many thanks for your thoughts

            Hi Aiyosh,

Thanks for the info, I was wondering whether the irritation caused could actually be seen as productive to the treatment but the general concensus seems to be a NO!

I'll be sure to look into the full ingredients list when l compare products from now on.

              Dr Glen..

First, thank you for being active here..it is appreciate, many of us read your fine posts for info..and thank you for that..

so...you believe in the scalp rollers? Ive been intrigued be them as Im stricly a vertex thinning guy...very dark hair with a light scalp.. have gotten some traction with Spectral DNC and provillus.. and have been intrigued by the scalp rollers, but in my mind I keep thinking it could damage healthy follicle units by puncturing the healthy ones...and this Spectral supposedly has nano- technolgy with allows for micro type absorption..

im 44 in age and I believe I have stopped the thining thats going for a few years and now going in the right direction.. Im also using revita shampoo

Thank you in advance for your response

                Minoxidil irritation

Irritation caused by regaine or rogaine is very real and very distressing.

I began with rogaine 5% liquid and hd 6 months trouble free. Results were promising and like most medicines that work i stopped using it for a while then reordered and so the problems started. Burning hot scalp, tightening, intense pain with no sleep and extreme flaking scalp. Very distressing. So i read the threads and decided it was sensitivity to P Glycol.... so used 5% foam same reaction.....more embarassment. used nizoral and grapeseed oil and the problem eventually went. I cant use any other shampoo now.

So after everything has settled i try a dab of 5% foam (no P Glycol) and off goes the problem again. So i am sensitised and it cant be P Glycol.

                What are your thoughts?
