Here we go again with the hair!

Well folks, it's official, People Magazine has announced the 2008 Sexiest Man Alive Award. Guess what? He's got a full head of hair AGAIN! Hugh Jackman, you know, the star of X-Men and many other Hollywood movies.

I'm really starting to think that hair is a common factor in being the "Sexiest Man Alive" because I only found ONE bald guy! I mean, Bruce Willis never made it either. So, I'm really seeing a trend here.

Growing up the son of a cosmetologist I was often exposed to different concepts of hair, shampoos, and the science of hair. The one thing that I didn't know until recently was that curly, wavy or straight hair is determined by the shape of the hair follicle! Who would have guessed that the follicle determined that trait!

Anyway, those of us with straight hair have ROUND follicles and those of us with curly/wavy hair have OVAL (or sometimes FLAT) shaped follicles. What's even more...

Well, that depends on genetics, but most people have about 100,000 hair follicles on their head. However, did you know that real blondes typically have around 140,000 follicles, brunettes 120,000 follicles, and red-heads have about 90,000 follicles! This fact comes from the Institute of Trichologists.

What is a Trichologist you say? A Trichologist is someone who studies hair. The prefix "tricho" is Greek and simply means 'hair'. So, typically when a word starts with "tricho"...

What do the pompadour, the mullet, and the shaved head have in common? They are all fads in men's hair styles (or lack there of). The problem with shaving your head is that it allows the hair loss process to continue unnoticed. Hair loss is best caught in the early stages and you never know if the next fad will require hair! A shaved head is not a trend, it's a fad. So, think about the future before you "buy-in" to the latest fad....once your hair is gone it's really hard to get back....
