Head Shaving: Trend or just a Fad?

Posted 11-03-2008 at 02:50 PM by JustJoe

What do the pompadour, the mullet, and the shaved head have in common? They are all fads in men's hair styles (or lack there of). The problem with shaving your head is that it allows the hair loss process to continue unnoticed. Hair loss is best caught in the early stages and you never know if the next fad will require hair! A shaved head is not a trend, it's a fad. So, think about the future before you "buy-in" to the latest fad....once your hair is gone it's really hard to get back.

Some people look great bald.........some don't!

This post gave me an idea to write one of my own. I think the benefit to having done the shave the hair thing, would be that at least you are accustomed to having shaved and it *may* become a more realistic option if the hair decides to make an unexpected departure.

All of today's posts were meant to give people ideas! I hope you get more than just one idea! Yes, there comes a time when nature or illness just beats being vain.

Hair is my hobby, some people like cars, some people like photography, .... I like hair! Crazy, I know!

I am not sure I agree with you about shaved heads being a fad. People shave their heads for a variety of reasons. Some out of necessity and others just to look different. Putting everyone into the category of "fad" would minimize a very personal decision when it comes to those who are balding. I shave my head because it looks better than seeing my shiny scalp and constantly trying to cover up the fact that my hair is thinned out.
I love hair, especially my own but as a bald woman, I wish more women had the courage to come out and be bald. There are so many women that do not want to wear a wig or anything else on their heads, yet "society" says it aint right! If I want to encourage more women to come out and show their bald heads, would that be trend setting or the making of yet another fad?
Granted, there are those who just need society to make up their minds as to what "looks good" or "what's hot and what's not", but beyond the illusion, people are suffering emotionally because they aren't accepted for the way they look. They push and strive for the next hottest thing hoping to be viewed as more attractive, but it fades so quickly and then they are on to the next thing...is it the fad or a hunger for acknowledgement? Being bald needs to be personal choice based on one's own personal preferences and such a person shouldn't be labeled as someone dupped into a "fad".

I also believe that the notion that men that are balding is unattractive is too played. There is so much more to the heart of a man and to who he is that to have him eclipsed by this popular norm is sad. While yes there are hair transplants and good options for those men who choose it, there are still others out there that don't wish to go that route.
I think men are so beautiful, especially when they can be who they are inside and out and not fear the reproach of others. One of the most attractive qualities to me about any man is knowing what he wants and who he is...he stands his ground with a unique and beautiful slant on life. God I love men!

I agree with AM, I don't think it's a fad. And just my own personal opinion but I actually like bald men, and I have never seen a guy with a short buzz cut who doesn't look nice - it shows confidence and looks great!
Shaving your hair as a man is much more accepted than women, which is a shame and this needs to change, and you only need to look at the picture above to see how beautiful a bald woman looks (of AM).
Anyway, I really don't think it's a fad, and the short shaved look is not only sexy and minimizies it (if that's what you want to do) but shows confidence and looks great (and I truely don't think it's a fad as more and more men are doing it and liking it and will continue to do it).

I have to agree with the ladies. I don't think it is a fad. I find men to be gorgeous bald. Although I may have a preference since my husband is bald. Since we have been together, he has had long hair then short hair that kept getting shorter until he finally shaved it. I love the shaved look on him. And as long as men and women have thinning hair, there will be shaved heads. Hell, I'm one of them.

I often wonder why we seek approval from others

Would a girl date me if I was shaved (yes if they did not there would be 1.4 billion guys who are single)

For those thinking of shaving or buzzing I often wish I was black because its normal to shave!

Hair transplants work and are great for guys who have certain characteristics... All I wonder is how many results will stand the test of time should these guys continue to lose
